This book, by renowned Cornish mining migration historian, Sharron Schwartz, tells the story of the arrival of the machinery of the Industrial Revolution to one of Mexico’s greatest silver mining centres: Real del Monte. Drawing on original company correspondence, it describes in detail the activities of one of the most important mining companies – the Real del Monte –  as it undertook the transatlantic exportation of 1,500 tons of machinery, including eight steam engines. The story of the Great Trek is told in full for the first time, and covers the trials and tribulations of the men who moved the machinery from the coast 266 miles inland to the mines, at great cost to life.  The book is essential reading for anyone interested the history of post independent Mexico, the penetration of British capital and technology to the newly independent nation and Cornwall’s role in this process.
